If You Have A Job In 2026, Here’s What You Need To Do

If you think your job is safe in 2026 and beyond...

The truth is - it's not.

And if you think that self-employment is "risky"...

Well, we've kind of come to a point where it's actually not as risky as it used to be.

7 Brutal Truths

So, I'm going to share '7 Truths'.

Some of which are quite brutal.

And which are things that we must look at if you have a job in 2026.

Truth #1: You can be fired with an email

Truth No. 1, you can be fired with an email.

Now in April 2026, Oracle fired 30,000 employees with an automated email from "Oracle leadership", stating that their roles were eliminated.

No prior warning from HR,
Minimal severance payouts,
and some people even lost their stock options.

Nowadays, when employees tell me that you still prefer the "security" of employment, it genuinely confuses me.
Since your security can be eradicated with just one decision by company management.

Now apart from losing your position and income,
this is a decision that you have NO say in.

And while most people think the insecurity is about losing your salary.
My take is that, the real psychological insecurity is that you have no control over your life.

Now in most cases, why I'm advocating self-employment is that, if you're self-employed, you have direct communication with your paymasters, which are also your clients.

If there's a problem, there's usually something you can work out with your customers because you have full control.

You can change your product or your service.
You can change the customer profile.
You can change the method of delivery.

Now, even if things don't work out with your clients, you at least know why.
And not get an email like; "Okay, we won't be needing you from tomorrow onwards"
With no way of asking questions or discussing terms.

Truth #2: Employment is often ONE income stream.

Now, the second truth is: Employment is often ONE income stream.

And once you lose your job, your income drops to 0.

I mean enough said right?

This is the real reason why most employees cling to their jobs.
Because you are 100% dependent on one income stream.

So, again why I'm advocating self-employment is that there are two ways in which most self-employed people can maintain multiple income streams.

Now, the first is that you have multiple clients.
And unless something really bad happens, you are unlikely to lose all your clients at the same time.

And, the second way in which self-employed people can have multiple streams is because they can engage in
multiple income activities.

So for example, even an Astrologer like me,
I can teach classes.
I can charge for speaker fees.
I can see clients.
Run workshops, sell products,
Rent out my equipment or my premises, license my Intellectual Property (IP), do one-off services, charge retainer services, manage other people's projects and other people's events, etc.

So as a self-employed person, you can adjust your activities and offerings according to the situation.

Which means, you can be extremely agile in a very fast-changing world.

Truth #3: You are much more replaceable as an employee with or without AI.

if you've ever left a job before, you know this.
Because when you left, what did your company do?

That's right - they simply replaced you within weeks.
And that's before AI even came into the picture.

So for the most part, most job descriptions are incredibly generic.
They really just need someone to come in and do the tasks that's on the bullet points.

So unless you are exceptionally good at your job, you are replaceable (by default) as an employee.

In fact, most companies deliberately design work scopes to be as generic as possible.
Precisely because they want the freedom to replace you anytime.

And now, if they can automate all or most of your tasks - You're screwed.

So if you are self-employed, (this is why I advocate it) is that you can design your service, customise it exactly to how you deliver it best, to the customer you uniquely serve best.

So people choose your service because of your brand, a specific feature, or perhaps a vision or a cause that you espouse.

Which means, they cannot just copy-and-paste your job description and hire a clone
from a look-alike LinkedIn profile.

Because companies hire roles.
Clients hire YOU.

And if you have a generic job description, this next truth will get you!

Truth #4: You are far too expensive.

Now, this bit is for my fellow Singaporeans.

Because you demand 3 to 5 times more salary than others in the region, but you don't always deliver 3 to 5 times the value.

Unpopular opinion - but it's the truth.

Now, this also applies to my viewers who come from generally wealthy countries such as those in Europe, USA, Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, etc.

Now, your competitors in the region, charging much less, can sometimes speak better English or Mandarin than you do.
Or they can use AI tools to do so (if they don't)

You probably know that not every Singaporean speaks grammatically-correct English.
And it's not like most Singaporeans can deliver professional presentations in fluent Mandarin right?

Many of your regional competitors nowadays are also educated overseas.
Or they have access to tools, AI tools that help them to bridge any kind of like sophistication or technology gaps.

And you know with remote work, because they work remotely, they actually offer the same availability as the local workers - who nowadays also want things like work-from-home,
You want flexible hours.

Well then, I mean you are providing about the same availability as the people who are working from the Philippines or Indonesia or Vietnam, etc.

So, why I say that there's an advantage to be self-employed is because, then you would be in a position to build a team of regional partners that you can tap on to do useful projects.

Which means, these regional workers now become your teammates.
Not competitors for jobs.

Truth #5: A massive wave of global unemployment is coming.

A massive wave of global unemployment is coming.
And companies are under pressure to cut costs because of AI and automation capability.

And this is regardless of AI effectiveness.

So the perception that automating is necessary, can result in significant job losses.

This means even if you and I know that AI isn't that great.
And it cannot replace a human worker, management may retrench workers anyway.
Because the Shareholders expect it.
Because the Market expects it.

And because other people are doing it.
So in some cases, the job genuinely can be automated fully or partially.

If you work with lots of emails, coordinating meetings, schedules, data spreadsheet reports, etc.
There's a very good chance a chunk of your work CAN and WILL be automated.

So right now, shortages from the Middle East will impact industries like Oil and Petrochemicals, Logistics, Semiconductors, Food Production, and by extension to just about every industry in the world.

Now, what this means is that production at the basic level will fall drastically.
All the inputs are not coming out from the Middle East.

So what this means - 'No Production' equals 'No Activity'.
'No Activity' equals 'No Jobs'.

So unless you think the US (Trump), can solve the Middle East situation in the next few weeks or months,
I don't think so,

Or #2, we can suddenly find an effective replacement for Crude Oil, Petrochemicals,
Helium and Fertilizers that are currently NOT coming out from the Middle East,
this situation of interrupted production is going to be extended.

And what this means is that, if you lose your job due to any of these shortages, it's not just happening at one company.
The whole industry will be retrenching.
And no one will be hiring.
And it could be years before the industry recovers if the supply doesn't continue.

And by then, automation would have developed well and truly enough so that your old job is well and truly gone.

Truth #6: There are still 8 billion people on this planet.

Now Truth No. 6, is a positive one.
And after all that negativity, there are still 8 billion people on this planet.

Which means people still need to eat, live, travel, be cared for, maintain properties, get tasks done, manage resources, manage relationships, etc.

So, it is NOT true that there are no WORK available.
'No Jobs' doesn't mean 'No Work'.

So even if you have no job, you can offer your services directly to the customers who need it.
So businesses nowadays can be started with a laptop, mobile phone and an internet connection.

Just ask the millions of freelancers in the region "How they do it?"

I'm talking about the foreign freelancers who are "stealing" your job from right under your noses.
So these businesses can be started at home with your bare hands, with tools or skills that you possess.

Truth #7: You may never before have given any thought to what YOU can offer in a business.

Look guys, I've been an Astrologer for a very long time.

And in consultation, people tell me they have no talent.
They have nothing to offer.
They have nothing to sell.
It's not true.

The problem is that you think the only skills of value are those that appear on your employee job description.
You think your only skills are the stuff that goes on your CV.

Which if you think about it, everything and all the stuff that goes on your CV, is stuff that other people on LinkedIn also have.

And now AI can replicate it.
And this is the reason why so many people feel depressed.
They feel useless.

Now, the true skills you possess are often not things that you learn in school.
And these are definitely not skills that you can pick up with a SkillsFuture certificate.

It is from you and your personality, and your expression.

Now, for example, my true skills include being able to tell the brutal truths on video
while cutting through the bullshit.

I didn't learn this at any school.
I'm very good at reading astrology charts to extract a person's natural strengths and purpose, and then weaving it into a business idea - a simple one that makes practical 'cow-sense'.

Now, the things that I learnt from my degree in astrology are pretty much the technical stuff.

But, what makes me a truly useful astrologer is not the technical skills.
But being able to connect the dots and build you a workable story.

So none of this will ever go on a CV.
No company will ever hire me as a full-time employee to do this.

And yet, I have done this work for more than a decade, without collecting a single cent as an employee.

So, you can tap on your natural strengths to do this too.
But you must be able to identify what you can offer to society on your own natural abilities.

Not necessarily based on your degree or your professional experience, but based on YOU.

You need to build a business that's practical now.
Not three years from now.

And guys, I hear this all the time from my clients.
They will say like "Oh May, this was such a great profile!"
"I resonate with all of it"
"I'll think about it maybe in 2 or 3 years time"
"I'll do my job first, in 2 or 3 years time I go build a business".

And, my response to this is...
Guys, I'm recording this in May of 2026.
2 to 3 years time we are looking at what? - 2028/2029?

You do not have the luxury of time guys.
If it's the first time you're doing a business it will take you months.
Potentially years to build something that is viable.

And you don't want to wait until the mass retrenchment show up before you start taking action.

You need to start now.
You don't have the luxury of time.
You need to be able to identify your 'Natural Audience' and what you are going to do for them.

So that, you can legitimately play a role and make a living in society.

So, if you are genuinely ready to start building your self-employment journey, not just to earn you an income but rather to start contributing your abilities to society in a useful and meaningful way, a solid astrology profile can help.

Work with me to extract the essential building blocks from your chart and build them into a simple viable offer for your 'Natural Audience'
